Guide

How to install and use Nukta Bangla Keyboard

Set up Nukta Bangla in a few minutes on Windows, Mac or Linux, then start typing Bangla in any app.

Install on Windows

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit or 32-bit. Not Windows on Arm yet.

If Windows shows 'Windows protected your PC', click More info → Run anyway.

  1. Double-click the NuktaBangla-Setup file you downloaded.
  2. When Windows asks for permission, click Yes, then Next → Install → Finish. Nukta Bangla adds itself to your keyboards.
  3. Nukta Bangla starts, with its bar at the top of the screen and its icon in the system tray. Press F12, or click the tray icon, to start typing Bangla.

How to switch: Press F12 to switch between English and Bangla, or click the tray icon. It shows নু while Bangla is on and EN while it's off.

Install on Mac

macOS 13 Ventura or newer, on Apple Silicon or Intel.

  1. Open NuktaBangla.dmg, then double-click Install Nukta Bangla.pkg.
  2. In the installer, click Continue → Install and enter your password.
  3. Log out and log in again (Apple menu → Log Out).
  4. Open System Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → Edit… → +. Choose Bangla on the left, then নুকতা বাংলা, then Add.

How to switch: Switch between ABC and Nukta Bangla from the keyboard icon in the menu bar, or press Control + Space (or fn/🌐).

Install on Linux

IBus, which GNOME and most desktops already have. On KDE, Xfce and others, make IBus your input method first (im-config -n ibus on Debian and Ubuntu).

  1. Download the installer, then run it in a terminal from the folder you saved it to: bash nukta-bangla-linux.sh
  2. It offers to install anything missing (IBus, its Python bindings, a Bangla font), then installs Nukta Bangla and restarts IBus.
  3. Open Settings → Keyboard → Input Sources → + → Bangla and add নুকতা বাংলা - বিজয়, নুকতা বাংলা - ফোনেটিক or both (GNOME). On other desktops, use ibus-setup → Input Method → Add → Bangla.
  4. Not in the list? Run ibus restart, or log out and log in again.

Or install with one command. With this command, Phonetic needs Rust; without it you get Bijoy only.

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Nukta-Solutions/nukta-bangla-keyboard/main/linux/bootstrap.sh | bash

How to switch: Press Super + Space to switch between your keyboards.

Switch between Bijoy and Phonetic

Windows

  1. Click the layout switch on the Nukta Bangla top bar, or right-click the tray icon and open কীবোর্ড লেআউট.
  2. Pick বাংলা · বিজয় or বাংলা · ফোনেটিক. It applies in every app.

Mac

  1. Click the নু icon in the menu bar.
  2. Pick বিজয় লেআউট or ফোনেটিক. It applies in every app and is remembered.

Linux

  1. Add both নুকতা বাংলা - বিজয় and নুকতা বাংলা - ফোনেটিক in Input Sources (step 3).
  2. Press Super + Space to switch between them, or use the layout menu in the top bar (GNOME).
